Four Million Dead: The Second Congolese War, 1998-2004
Written in April 2004, this is an early study of the Second Congo War, providing in-depth analysis of the conflict with the relatively limited open-source information that was available in late 2003 and early 2004. Since then, various additional studies dealing with the Second Congo War have been released and a more accurate and complete picture of the conflict has emerged. Amongst the revised understandings is the overall fatality estimate which, as the title of this study suggests, stood at around four million in 2003-04. In early 2010, the Human Security Report Project at Simon Fraser University argued that this was exaggerated due to methodological errors and revised the approximate fatality toll to well under a million.
